Dieses Spiel gilt als die Fortsetzung des 2007 erschienenen Originals mit dem gleichen Namen. Das Spiel wurde am 19. April 2011 für OS X, MS Windows, Xbox 360, PS 3 und Linux veröffentlicht. Electronic Arts vertreibt die Einzelhandelsversionen des Spiels, während Steam, der Content Delivery Service von Valve, die Linux-, OS X- und Windows-Versionen betreut. Der Regisseur des Spiels ist Joshua Weier, Produzent ist Gabe Newell und Komponist ist Mike Morasky. Es ist sowohl ein Mehrspieler- als auch ein Einzelspielerspiel.
Im Vergleich zur Originalversion des Spiels bietet die zweite Version neue Spielelemente und -funktionen, darunter Traktorstrahlen, aus Licht erzeugte Brücken, Laserumlenkung, farbähnliche Gele, die die Geschwindigkeit des Spielers beschleunigen, usw., wodurch die Spielerfigur Portale auf jeder Art von Oberfläche platzieren oder viel höher springen kann. Wie der erste Teil hat auch Portal 2 aufgrund seines Tempos, seines schwarzen Humors und seines Schreibstils viel Lob von der Kritik erhalten.

Portal 2 is a masterpiece, a work of art that you will love for its ingenious story pop-culture, references to logical puzzles and co-op multiplayer. Definitely a candidate for game of the year.

Portal 2 is the best game I had the opportunity to play this year. It interests the player from the beginning and stays like that to its final minutes. It entertains with great, humorous dialogue, intrigues with compelling puzzles - as a result you keep staring at the screen and forget about the world around you. Valve's newest game is also a well-written product with great attention to detail.
