It’s fair to say that The Journey Down: Chapter Three kicks on and raises the stakes massively to try and offer a finale to remember. There’s no doubt it delivers clever puzzles aplenty, requiring a logical thought process and, sadly, a lot of back-tracking to solve.

That being said the famous saying “all good things must come to an end” kept going around in my head and after finishing this final chapter it’s quite clear that they’ve saved the best for last. The story has kept me hooked throughout the previous chapters and once again it shines bright in the last chapter. Everything about the story comes to the perfect end and without spoiling it I think you’ll be very satisfied by how they tie up all the loose ends because they leave no stone unturned. Every single character plays a very important role throughout every single chapter but in this chapter they all felt much more important. In fact on the whole this chapter felt more important than the rest and not just because it is the final chapter. It’s more entertaining than the previous chapters and that’s no small feat because chapter one and chapter two were very entertaining in their own right it’s just for me chapter three raised the bar quite considerably. There are no drastic changes in this final chapter and nor does there need to be, so once again you will enjoy what the gameplay has to offer. Each puzzle that’s present in the gameplay plays an important part in the story and thankfully they’re all logical which is great because some game’s just throw more puzzles in that don’t really matter which can harm the immersion levels a bit. Whilst I really enjoyed the puzzles I did find them to be a little too easy and for me they definitely weren’t as challenging as the puzzles in the previous chapter’s which might be a little disappointing for some. You will also have to deal with the usual technical issues when progressing through the game as well, but thankfully none of these issues proved to be too much of a problem and in the end I completely forgot about them, which is great. Once again one of my favourite aspects about this game was its presentation. Visually the game oozes charm in all areas and the sound design sets the tone perfectly and in my opinion I felt that the voice actors put on their best performance in this chapter. At the end of the day fans of this little series will be completely satisfied with how it comes to an end and you may like me have a little tear at the end because this series has been a pleasure to play. In fact if you haven’t played any chapter yet then I fully recommend that you do because it delivers a fantastic story and it stays interesting and stirs up emotions throughout your time with the game.

While shorter than the last instalment, and the easiest of the three to boot, the final chapter of The Journey Down brings closure to series veterans and, more importantly, makes the entire trilogy required gaming for adventure fans in general.

In my review of Chapter Two, I praised the developers for learning from what wasn't great in Chapter One, and I'm happy to see that they followed through in the final chapter. It took a long time for this story to finally see its conclusion, but I'm really glad that it did. Now that it's complete, I can definitely recommend this series to fans of point & click adventure games. If you haven't played Chapters One and Two, make sure to do so before you play Chapter Three; as of this writing, you can get all three for just $30, and that feels pretty fair to me.

The Journey Down: Chapter Three is the sort of title that leaves me saddened by its completion, but eager to see what the crew at SkyGoblin will do next. The Journey Down feels like a love letter to the genre, and its legacy – there are elements of LucasArts, Sierra On-Line, and other industry giants present here. But it manages to stand alone as a memorable trilogy that only improved with each new chapter. It is a worthy addition to any puzzle-loving, soundtrack-blasting, humor-embracing point-&-click fan's library, and Chapter Three is a conclusion to the tale that's just what the doctor ordered.
