R-Type Final 2 is a very enjoyable and pretty shmup, but know that it sticks strictly to recreating “good old times” and don’t expect it to surprise you with anything. As a tribute, it’s a very good game, but in itself it is derivative.

I had high expectations for R-Type Final 2; its direct predecessor is one of my favorite games in the genre. To this day, I still rant to strangers about its massive collection of bizarre ships, its daringly cryptic branching paths and its boldly avant-garde final stage. The sequel doesn't quite soar to the same heights, but after you start unlocking its better content, it "finally" becomes a solid, compelling, long overdue return to the beloved, iconic series.

The soundtrack is bland and the game offers cut scenes that are nice, but don't elevate the core gameplay. I was hoping for something close to the amazing level Gradius 5 reached (a fantastic tribute to a classic shmup series) what we got is a game that feels like it was put into production too soon due to the budget running out. The game looks and plays like a decent fan-made tribute to R-Type and not a proper entry to the series, if there is a remastered version ever released, I'll happily visit that.

R-Type Final 2 is about as niche as niche gets. It represents a genre that’s hardly en vogue, and it’s a traditional, hardcore example of an experience that ferociously clings to its roots. This is not the shmup I would gift to someone in hopes of luring them into the genre, and it’s an especially difficult sell with the rather astounding $40 price point before DLC. All of this makes R-Type Final 2 a game with a fairly narrow scope, but anyone directly within that Venn diagram will be in for an exceptionally-produced, technically excellent iteration on a legendary franchise.

The game itself is ok, it has that R-Type feel but boy does the difficulty curve skyrocket in the second level. Which I have yet to complete. This instantly kills engagement and just infuriates. Hopefully there is some sort of balancing coming in a form of patches or DLC, but probably not. What's the point of a game when it feels nigh on impossible to get beyond the second level because of annoying enemy designs.

You move to the next screen, get blown to pieces within a few seconds by some enemy that attacks with no warning, go back having learnt what the enemy will do, beat it, rinse and repeat. You literally die every new screen you move into and start again.

R-Type Final 2 is a blast from the past, a good revival of the genre with a modern twist on it. Frenetic and incredibly hard is a good pastime, but can become frustrating in the long term for the pixel perfect accuracy needed.

While rediscovering this saga is an obvious joy for any shmup lover, we can’t help but quickly notice the many shortcomings. R-Type Final 2 is an honest game made with passion, but it lacks several months of development, and certainly did not need to comply with modern publisher standards with its Season Pass, even though the technical side of things still needs a lot of polish. It’s a shame, but we can hope for a perfectly playable game after a few patches. The R-Type series’ final act is yet to come.

But for NIS America to release R-Type Final 2 in this condition on the Switch is unacceptable. To then add insult to injury, before fixing this mess of a game they then have the gall to release 2 level DLC packs, stage passes and a 'Deluxe' edition and make it an even bigger cash grab. This isn't just incompetence, it's insulting price gouging. Any interest I had in this game is now long dead. I won't bother at any discount either, just done supporting publishers that pull this BS.

There's always a place for classic concepts executed well, and despite being somewhat rough around the edges,that's precisely what R-Type Final 2 delivers.

R-Type Final 2 is a wonderful follow-up to a classic series that I will always be down for more of. The steep price will turn off some, but once you get into the action it truly is one of the most satisfying genres around. I want more games of this type, but I feel like we will continue to see less and less of them as time goes on. It’s worth the trade-off to me as I enjoy the bright flashes and vibrant colors. Final 2 has much more visually attractive graphical design than Final 1 was.The good is that R-Type is back! Everyone’s favorite ships, favorite weapons and favorite enemy - the Bydo! It’s a really fun and addicting game. It has a ton of replay value which is good because you’ll need those replays as practice to progress through the game. That’s right, the arcade quarter-muncher difficulty is back in full “force” (R-Type pun intended). If you decide to get the DLC or Digital Deluxe version then you’ll get 6 reimagined stages from previous games in the series.If you’re a fan of old school shmups then it’s a must-buy. R-Type Final 2 is sadly the classic example of form over substance. On paper, it provides fans of the beloved R-Type series what they would want in a modern sequel. In reality, it is simply an unenjoyable, below average title with little allure to wade through it.

R-Type Final 2 is a satisfying shmup with many challenging, carefully crafted stages. Having so many different ships gives it a ton of replay value, and also gives you many strategic options for how you tackle a given area. I wish it had a more striking, clear visual style so I could appreciate the designs and stages more (and die less to dopey things). Still, it’s solid in every other regard (and you should try the demo to see that for yourself), so I can’t stay mad at it for long.

All of this leads to a game experience that doesn’t quite feel as polished as it could have been, but with enough of that core R-Type DNA to keep me engaged enough to keep on unlocking ships. Although, once again I come back to that silly title, because even R-Type Final 2 isn’t the final R-Type. There’s DLC to come, and a premium edition just of this game if you’re particularly keen.

It is hard to think of a product more suitable for experienced R-Type Final 2 r-typers. In slavishly retracing the trail left by the famous Eighties arcade shooter, the revival operation by Granzella Inc. modernizes the playful recipe here and there. of departure, finally returning an experience with a high nostalgic rate, with a lot of difficulty well above the average, just like in the old days. Whether this is the true finale of the series or not, try not to miss the exciting opportunity to take flight among the stars again.

The game is an easy recommendation for anyone that has been pining for the shoot-’em-up glory days or any fan of arcade-style games. There is a lot of trial and error that is inherent with games of this nature and if rote memorization coupled with some light strategy in weapon choices doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, you might not find it here. There are multiple difficulty modes, however, that add continues and alter some boss patterns. I found the easiest setting offers a fair challenge while still teaching lessons to take into the more demanding difficulties. R-Type Final 2 is a prime example of a competent product that fills a niche perfectly. Even though R-Type Final was meant to be the last game in the franchise, this new sequel proves there’s still some fight left for shmups.

R-Type Final 2 is an excellent shmup and a worthwhile follow-up to one of the best shooters in the PS2's library. It could have gone a bit further to make it a more fulfilling experience but what's here is wonderful nonetheless.
